Plan your trip

Long Weekend in Lisbon

Trip details:

I'm travelling to Lisbon on Feb 21-Feb 24. Would like a plan to explore the city, cover the regular tourist sights as well as do some fun and unique things. I'm a female travelling alone, so do keep that in mind. I will also need help with choosing a mid-range hotel/airbnb/hostel.

February 21 - 24, 2014:

The maps below has all the places in Lisbon mentioned in the itinerary highlighted

Feb 21 Day 1: History, Hills & Local Flavor

Baixa

Image: Baixa district

Begin with Rossio and head south into the Baixa district. Walk along the old shopping streets past elegant buildings with their tiled facades. At the other end of Baixa, you reach Praca do Comercio. Enjoy coffee in one of the elegant arched cafes. Castelo de Sao Jorge has wonderful hilltop views.

Alfama

Wander up the old Moorish streets of the Alfama district or catch a funicular. In the other direction you'll find the lively Barrio Alto. Take the short-cut on the Santa Justa Lift. Wander through elegant Chiado district. This is a great place for finding small, family run cafes, great shops and good nightlife.

Feb 22 Day 2: Museums, Monasteries and the River Tagus

Torre de Belem

The western waterfront area of Belem on the River Tagus is full of museums, including a Naval Museum, an Archaeological Museum and a modern cultural center. The Torre de Belém a World Heritage fort dating from 1520, has river views of the Ponte 25 de Abril suspension bridge and, across the river, the imposing Cristo Rei statue. Jeronimos Monastery is a late Gothic masterpiece, and the Pasteis de Belém is home of the Portuguese tart.

Feb 23 Day 3: Day Trips from Lisbon

Sintra is famed for its gardens and turreted buildings. Enjoy the beaches on the Sunny Coast or Portuguese Riviera. Visit the Estoril casino, the Bay of Cascais and the wild waves of Boca do Inferno. Fátima is a Catholic pilgrimage site. Nearby are other pretty villages such as the medieval Óbidos and Batalha with its UNESCO World Heritage-listed monastery. If you like wine, head for a day in Evora, the Bucelas region, or Azeitao.

I've marked all these options in the map below:

Feb 24: Day 4: Bidding Good bye.

Wake up to the last sunrise in Lisbon as today you will be heading back to your hometown!

I forgot to mention, I would love to experience Lisbon's nightlife, so any tips on safe neighborhoods where I can venture out at night would be great.

Hi Surabhi,

It'll be great if you can help me decide on the accommodation first so I can book it right away. We can then plan the rest of the stuff at leisure.

Useful advice

I found Surabhi's advice very useful but it wasn't anything I couldn't have found in a guidebook. It lacked much detail and I didn't get any response to my comments asking for changes or recommendations for nightlife, etc. I've used PlanMy.Travel for planning another holiday to San Francisco and had a very wonderful experience there. So judging by those standards, I would rate this experience as 4 stars.
