Itinerary: Five Days Adventure Trip in New Zealand

Trip details:

I'm planning a trip from Sydney to New Zealand in March. I have 5 days and would like to make the most of my time in New Zealand. I'm going with my husband. We're both 36 and fairly active. We would love to do as many adventure sports as possible. Budget is not a major concern but we don't want to splurge.

Overview:

Queenstown

QUEENSTOWN is New Zealand's premier adventure tourism destination.

All activities are within a days return drive from here so you can book accommodation in the town and be collected or arrange  pick up from a central location. The town is easily walkable and with free pick up and drop off you wont need to hire a car.

ACCOMMODATION

I use Scenic Suites for my tour groups. This hotel is around NZD 169 per night, rooms have views of the lake or the Remarkable Mountain ranges and the hotel is a short walk into town. Accommodation in Queenstown varies widely so check also on trip advisor for other recommendations.

Day 1:

Most flights from Sydney arrive by mid afternoon so you will have time on the first day to take a cruise on the lake on the vintage steamship TSS Earnslaw. You can either do an afternoon cruise which takes one andhalf hours and costs NZD$55 per head or an evening cruise combined with a Water Peak High Country Farm visit and gourmet barbeque dinner. Unless you are keen to visit a farm I would do take the cruise and dine at any of the restaurants in Queenstown.

Book with Real Journeys who currently have a 20% discount on mutliple bookings with this company. They also operate the Milford Sound Cruise I also recommend to you for DAY 2

DAY 2 MILFORD SOUND:

This is the most scenic journey I have taken in my life, I totally recommend it to you! Real Journeys offer overnight nature cruises which inlcude the opportunity to explore by kayak. Or you can do a day trip. Either way you are collected in Queenstown and driven to the location. This is a full day experience.

DAY 3 DART RIVER SAFARI:

Take a jet boat safari into Lord of the Rings territory with the guys from Dart River Safaris. You can jet oat up the river and take some inflatable kayaks down. They collect you from the hotel and drop you off on the return. I did this the other day and am totally impressed by this operation. If you have seen the Lord of The Rings  you will recognise the location for sure.

Hi Andrea

Thanks for your mail. I am currently on tour in the fabulous South Island with a bunch of people so have up to date information on this location. Before I begin, please clarify if you would prefer the North or South Island. From Sydney both islands are easy to travel to. The South is the adventure capital but the North also has lots of options. I will briefly outline a couple of ideas for you for either island, give me an indication of which you prefer and I will respond in full.

North Island

A GREAT WALK is the Tongariro Crossing. Its a one day trek from Taupo where you could also try Bunjee jumping, also take in Rotorua for some white water rafting (also one day) spend another day zip lining in the forest and soak in some wonderful spa pools as well as take in some spa treatments. A Maori cultural experience is also possible.

SOUTH ISLAND

Fly into Queenstown. Bungee jumping, Dart River Safari by jet boat into Lord of the Rings territory, paragliding and wine tasting. You could also do a one day trip to the Milford Sounds.

I went up the Dart River yesterday, it is the most exqusitely beautiful place. As is the Milford Sounds.

All these options are day trips where you would base yourself in one town and return in the evening.

Definitely South sounds more appealing to us. Lets go with that.

Hi Dianne,

Now that we've decided on the South Island, let me know what next. I'd like to book flights and accommodations asap and we can plan the day by day plan later?

Hi Amanda I did put up an itinerary the other night as a guideline but for some reason (probably that I am traveling in a remote south island location) it hasnt loaded. I wondered why you hadnt responded to that! Just so you can begin planning, the first advice was that you should book a flight from Sydney to Queenstown. Most airlines offer flights from Sydney to Queenstown.
